Outside the 9-5 with Sam from Silent Shout

Silent Shout was born from Sam's days in the club scene, and the taste he got for how music can make people feel. Today, Silent Shout dub themselves 'sicker than your average' - a reputation they've lived up to by providing wedding entertainment outside of the box, heavily personalised for each couple, that takes risks with genre, artists, and timing.

TWSCO: Why do you do what you do?

SAM: I guess for me it was a bit of a journey to get to a point where I knew this was exactly what I wanted to be doing. It all started 10 years ago when I first started DJing and trying and trying and finally getting into the club circuit which was what I had always wanted.

From there I was playing so many sets all over town and travelling around a bit for festivals and gigs. I was just doing the odd wedding here and there, and people would ask if I could do theirs. I was sort of fighting that off for a couple of years as I really wanted the club / touring DJ life. At that point I was all about it (the club scene) & I did get some incredible opportunities, but the weddings were there - clipping my heels and I just all of a sudden saw it; there are people out there that love music just as much as I do and I could bring this vibe and style to these people through their wedding day.

I thought I should bring club quality DJ sets to a wedding and make that a thing. Looking back at the past 2 years of doing this - in particular, it’s a cool feeling and a good decision to bring that quality and point of difference through music.

TWSCO: Do you do weddings full time? If yes, can you tell us how you felt when you made the jump? If no, what's stopping you?

SAM: I can gladly say I do. It has been 2 years full time, it was so scary making that change as it all happened so fast. I actually got a big push in to it in the form of being fired from my day job - which had me thinking 'ok what's next?'. After talking with my partner Bonnie about what to do, we decided together that I would give everything to Silent Shout and I’m so glad I did it with her support. I’ll be forever grateful to her for it as I don’t think it would have happened otherwise. Fear is a crazy thing and it holds people back so much but that support just brought us through to now. So thank you Bonnie.

TWSCO: What program or tech can't you live without?

SAM: Studio Ninja. From working out of the Wedding Social Co. the changes I’ve made to my business have been insane, and starting to use Studio Ninja was one of them - actually life changing. From the workflow and ability to track leads to the support: AMAZING!

TWSCO: What do you think has been a key reason for the success of your business?

SAM: It's corny to say but I do believe it’s my love for what I do. Thinking outside the box with music and not following trends but creating them has been massive for Silent Shout’s success. I also think it’s the level of detail and care that goes into our weddings. I understand that the day is such a huge build up for a couple, so being on top of everything is important to me as I just want them to have the best day they can. Thinking about the music and using it in a way to connect has been the way people remember Silent Shout and why they talk about the brand to others.

TWSCO: What's next for you?

SAM: 2020 hey…. It’s shaping up to be the biggest year yet and we just want to keep our quality to the highest standard and keep absorbing more inspiration by going to shows and checking out new music and artists. I have some awesome DJ sets coming up, one being for the Lovedale Long Lunch which is something I’ve wanted to do for a while now so that will be cool. I also want to introduce a new DJ to our team this year so we can help more people absolutely send it on their wedding day. I just really want to keep thinking outside the box and see where we can go with this. 2020 let's do this!
